Utility Savings
Utility Savings refers to balancing the demand on power grids by encouraging customers to shift electricity demand to times when electricity is more plentiful or when other demand is lower, typically through prices or monetary incentives. In the context of thermostats, this means temporarily allowing the energy company to adjust the thermostat. For example, a utility savings event in the summer can include raising the setpoint.
Events can have multiple phases. For example, a summer utility savings event can include a "pre-cool" phase that temporarily lowers the setpoint when demand is lower. A second phase can then raise the setpoint for the remainder of the event.
Utility savings programs are voluntary. Homeowners typically get a rebate from the energy company for participating. Homeowners may opt out of an event, but the energy company may unenroll the customer from the program if done too often.
Finding a Utility Savings Program
Finding a utility savings program is done through the mobile app. An initial pop-up will lead to energy savings plans in the area. The app determines whether the house is eligible for a utility savings program based on the ZIP code entered at the time the house was created; an incorrect ZIP code will inhibit this function. To update the ZIP code, please update your home address.
If energy savings programs are available, they will be displayed; otherwise, the app will display "No rebates available in your Zip Code."

Utility savings programs can be revisited at any time by going to the Menu -> Utility Savings Finder, then selecting the appropriate house from the prompt if there are multiple ones.
New programs will be added as they become available, and you'll be notified by a banner in the Trane Home app when a program is available in your area.

Utility Savings Events
⚠️WARNING!⚠️The web portal has limited support for utility savings events. The only indication of the event will be in the web portal with a banner over the affected thermostat(s) that says "You are in a utility savings event. If you override too many events, you may be automatically unenrolled from your Utility Savings Programs" along with a link. Set points appear normally, and any change in scheduling mode (on/off hold) or temperature will silently override the utility savings event. |
During a utility savings event, the setpoints on the mobile app will be displayed as "--" and "DR" on the thermostat. A banner will show above with the text "You are in an active utility savings event."

During a utility savings event, the thermostat is placed on a temporary hold for the duration of the event. Additionally, certain automations are suppressed (not run) during the event. Any automation with the following actions (either normal or delayed) will be suppressed:
- Setpoints
- Permanent Hold
- Run Schedule
The following actions may be taken freely during the utility savings event without causing an opt-out:
- System mode change (heat/cool/auto/off)
- Emergency heat enable/disable
- Fan mode
- Air cleaner
- Edit schedule/presets
Override (Opt-Out) of an Event
Any of the following changes will result in an override prompt:
- Changing either setpoint
- Changing the schedule to either "Run Schedule" or "Permanent Hold"
The prompt reads, "Are you sure you want to override a Utility Savings Event? If you override too many events, you may be automatically unenrolled from your Utility Savings Programs". Clicking Cancel aborts the override. Please click Continue to go ahead with the override. Overrides are irreversible - once overridden, it is not possible to re-enter the event for the remainder of the event.
