Setting up and Using Wireless Indoor Sensors
With Trane® Priority Thermostats
The Trane Priority Thermostat can support up to 4 wireless remote sensors for indoor air temperature monitoring and averaging. Averaging means that the system combines the temperatures from the thermostat and each remote sensor, then uses the average as the current indoor temperature to control your heating or cooling. This helps you to smooth out cooler and warmer areas of your home.
The Remote Sensor kit is sold separately and can be purchased through your dealer. It is battery-powered, allowing additional flexibility in placement.
Placement options include:
- Mounted to the wall with the included hardware, preferably on an interior wall.
- Upright on the included stand (as shown in the image above).
- On a flat surface, such as a table or shelf, without the stand.
- For optimal results, place the sensor away from direct sunlight, vents, air returns, doors, exterior walls, and drafty windows.
Getting Started
- Remove the sensor from the packaging, and slide open the sensor's battery cover by pressing downward. Please have two AAA batteries on hand, but do not insert them yet.
- On the thermostat, select Menu.
- Tap Indoor Sensors.
- Press Add Sensor.
- Insert the two AAA batteries into the sensor compartment.
- Press and hold the RESET tab that is inside the sensor's battery compartment for 8-10 seconds to reset the sensor.
- The thermostat will search for the sensor.
- When the sensor appears, look for a match for the sensor code displayed on the sensor's internal label (three hyphenated alphanumeric pairs, i.e., xx-xx-xx). If the sensor display shows "Sensor-xx-xx-xx" and it matches the sensor ID from the label, press Connect.
- A blue checkmark appears when the sensor is connected successfully.
- If the sensor pairing fails, the thermostat will display "Connection Failed" next to the sensor entry and prompt you to retry the pairing operation. Press Try Again to retry.
- If the sensor pairing fails, the thermostat will display "Connection Failed" next to the sensor entry and prompt you to retry the pairing operation. Press Try Again to retry.
- You can repeat these steps to include additional sensors (up to 4).
- Once all sensors are added successfully, press the back arrow in the upper-left corner to return to the Indoor Sensors screen.
Managing Your Sensors
After adding a sensor, you will now see at least two sensors under the Indoor Sensors menu: the thermostat itself and any remote indoor sensors you have added. In the example below, you'll see the thermostat's built-in sensor listed as "This Thermostat" and the sensor we added above.
Viewing Sensor Status
To view the status of the sensors, tap the sensor entry for more details.
- When selecting the sensor "This Thermostat," i.e., the internal sensor on your thermostat, you'll see the following information:
- Temperature averaging On/Off
- Current sensor temperature
- Current Humidity
- Sub-G controller information (used for internal troubleshooting)
- The status page for wireless sensors includes the same temperature averaging, current temperature, and current humidity data, but also displays information related specifically to wireless sensors, i.e,:
- Signal Strength (displayed as RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) and Connection status)
- Battery Life (battery voltage and battery status; a fresh set of batteries will report "Good," and those in the example below should be replaced)
- Sensor ID (matches the value on the internal label)
- Firmware Version (used for internal troubleshooting)
Naming Remote Sensors
- To name or rename a sensor, tap the sensor name to view its status page.
- Select Edit Name in the upper right corner.
- You can choose a new name for the remote sensor from 12 different predefined Sensor Names. Select a name from the list and press the back button to apply the change.
Averaging Indoor Temperature
By enabling or disabling sensors that are in the averaging pool, you can adjust the balance of temperature within your home.
- In the Indoor Sensors menu, tap the sensor you wish to add to or remove from temperature averaging.
- In the next screen, select On or Off by tapping the Temp Averaging toggle.
- If you choose to turn off averaging for that sensor, it will not be used to calculate an average indoor temperature.
- Any sensor(s) that have averaging turned on will continue to be included in the average.
- If you have just one sensor active, it will become the only sensor, with no averaging calculation.
- NOTE: You can, if desired, disable the thermostat's on-board sensor and use only remote wireless sensors. Please be aware that if the batteries die on the remote sensor or the sensor loses communication with the thermostat for any reason, the thermostat will sense it, display an error alert code on the main screen, and revert to using the thermostat's internal sensor. In this case, replace the sensor's batteries and normal operation will resume.
Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing problems after following the instructions above, here are some suggestions that might help:
- Make sure you are using fresh alkaline AAA batteries in the sensor. We advise against using Lithium-type batteries; they are not optimized for the continuous light load associated with a remote sensor.
- During initial pairing, bring the sensor close to the thermostat. After it has paired successfully, you can try moving the remote sensor to its final desired location.
- Check the signal strength of the paired sensor after moving it to its preferred location.
- Regularly check battery life and sensor status; unexpected temperature readings or HVAC cycles may be caused by low or dead batteries in a remote sensor.
